In 1977, Zhou switched from gymnastics to diving and won a national championship within just 4 years. At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, she claimed the gold medal in the women’s 10m platform event. Due to injury, she retired in 1986 and became a coach for the Hubei Provincial Diving Team. After graduating from Peking University in 1990, she joined the national diving team as a coach. Appointed as the head coach in 1998, she is renowned for her strict leadership. Over more than 20 years at the helm, she has trained dozens of Olympic and world champions, leading the Chinese diving team to nearly sweep gold medals in major events such as the Olympics and World Championships.
