Wuhan Antivenom Hospital Directory

Wuhan has recorded 6 families and 18 species of snakes. After a snakebite, patients should seek immediate medical attention, as anti-venom serum is the only definitive treatment. Studies have shown that the optimal time to administer anti-venom serum after a snakebite is within 2 hours, and the following "three dos and three don'ts" scientific self-rescue guidelines should be followed:

Three Dos:

Rinse the wound promptly
to reduce residual toxins on the skin surface.
Limit physical activity
to avoid accelerating toxin spread through rapid movement or intense exercise.
For specific scenarios—such as bites from neurotoxic venomous snakes with no visible swelling or early-stage hematotoxic venomous snake bites—apply localized pressure or proximal compression bandaging above the wound and keep the injured limb positioned below heart level to slow toxin reflux.

Three Don'ts:

Do not attempt to suck venom orally, as toxins may enter the rescuer’s bloodstream through oral mucosa.
Do not incise the wound, as improper cutting risks infection or exacerbating tissue damage.
Do not apply excessively tight bandages around the entire limb, which can cause severe ischemic necrosis worse than the venom itself.

Antivenom

China currently produces and markets four types of antivenoms, which can neutralize venoms from most snake species found in China:

1. Agkistrodon Antivenom

Covers: Agkistrodon halys (Pallas pit viper), Gloydius saxatilis (Mamushi), Trimeresurus stejnegeri (Green bamboo viper), etc.

2. Deinagkistrodon Antivenom

Covers: Brown-spotted pit viper, Hundred-pace viper,Green bamboo viper, etc.

3. Bungarus Antivenom

Covers: Bungarus fasciatus, Bungarus multicinctus，Lapemis curtus, Ophiophagus hannah (King cobra), etc.

4.Naja Antivenom

Covers: Naja atra (Chinese cobra), Ophiophagus hannah, etc.
